STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL CURRICULUM Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of academic disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each and every young child. Candidates understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Candidates use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young child. (NAEYC 2011) Brief Description of Evidence: In ECED233 Emerging Literacy I created and implemented a daily lesson play for young children using the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr., John Archambault. When designing this curriculum I used many different resources that help challenge each child on an individual level as well as in a group. When creating this lesson plan I implemented many different teaching strategies to create a positive, fun leaning outcome. Analysis of What I Learned: Through this activity, I learned that using many different activities and resources that focused around the book deepened the understanding of what I was trying to help the children learn. I realize as a teacher I need to be flexible thought out activities as well as reflect back on the activities and evaluate the experience. This will help with any changes that might need to be changed. How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard: As a teacher, I understand the importance in using my knowledge and resource s to design and implement a developmentally appropriate early childhood curriculum. I feel that this activity showed that I am competent in using different materials and resources and implementing them into a meaningful curriculum. .
