Introduction
When a computer is switched on, data can be stored in its memory. However, when a computer is switched off, most of this data is lost. Where this data is kept Characteristics of these components.
If you look inside the processor you will find two components that have to do with memory RAM BIOS
Memory
Memory
Two kinds of memory RAM Stores the data while the computer is working on it ROM Stores the instructions, that tell the computer how to start working
RAM
Random Access Memory (RAM) is a fast temporary area where programs and data are stored whilst the computer is switched on. For example, when you load a word processing program it is loaded into RAM.
Characteristics of RAM
Ram is Volatile It holds data and instructions temporarily The computer power has to be on. Amount of RAM determines which programs will run and how efficiently
ROM
Read Only Memory (ROM) is computer memory that cannot be changed by a program or user.
ROM retains its memory even after the computer is turned off. For example, ROM stores the instructions for the computer to start up when it is turned on again
Characteristics of ROM
ROM is permanent Holds data and instructions even when the computer is switched off. Data or program instructions are read only and cannot be changed. Used to contain fixed start-up programs, e.g. booting program to start a computer, or instructions to put characters on the screen.
Measuring Memory
1 thousand bytes
(actually 1024)
Summary
Memory is stored in RAM and ROM RAM and ROM have different characteristics Two memory components are a RAM chip and a BIOS chip Memory is measured in bytes
