Professional Growth Plan Reflection

For the course of my second professional semester I created two main goals that I hoped to accomplish. My first goal was focused on developing an inclusive classroom that accommodated for many different learning styles. The second goal was to develop and implement varied forms of formative and summative assessment when appropriate. As the semester progressed, I believe I was able to effectively implement my two goals into each of my classrooms. For my first goal, I worked towards understanding the different learning styles of the students within the first day of classes. I utilized a VARK questionnaire in order to determine which ways my students learned best by (read/write, auditory, visual, and kinesthetic). After interpreting all of the data I was surprised to find that about 90% of the students learned best through hands on/ kinesthetic methods. In my physics 20 class I worked hard to include an experiment for every main topic, completing 3 throughout the course of the practicum. I also included many small demonstrations and quick labs throughout the unit. Some of the labs included dropping eggs into cups for Newtons First Law of motion, swinging on a swing set to understand free fall, and gliding across the floor on skateboards to understand Newtons Third Law of Motion. In my ,math 6 classroom, I employed the use of many hands on manipulatives including base 10 blocks, coins, and hands on experiments using everyday household items. In addition to accommodating for kinesthetic learners, I also wanted to accommodate for those students who were strong read/write, visual and auditory learners. I employed the smart board in almost every lesson, as well as more traditional forms of media, including the chalkboard, individual whiteboards, and pencil and paper. I also discovered quite early on that my physics students really did not like to take notes, so I developed assisted to help the students follow along. Finally, I worked extremely hard to utilize the rule of three within my lesson planning. For example: When teaching Newtons Laws of motion, I developed a lab for each law for the kinesthetic learners, I had assisted notes for the read/write students, and I explained and elaborated on all ideas verbally. My second professional goal that I developed for PSII was focused on developing and implementing different forms of effective formative and summative assessment. Overall, I believe I did a great job of including several different forms of assessment within each of my classes. For my Physics 20 class, I focused on having many formative assessments such as questioning, worksheets, and whole group labs. In addition, I also added summative assessments including a partner lab on forces, and a chapter and unit test.

One area that still needs a little more development would be my ability to assess a Physical Education class. I found it difficult to implement several different types of assessments, and ended up relying heavily on what the previous instructor had developed. In order to better acquaint myself with the Physical Education curriculum and assessment techniques, I plan on taking a curriculum and instruction course on Physical Education.
