Content Based Instruction

Content-based instruction (CBI) is a teaching method that emphasizes learning about a subject rather than language. Students learn about a topic using the target language as a tool to develop knowledge and linguistic ability. There are three CBI models: sheltered, adjunct, and theme-based. The CBI framework involves an "into," "through," and "beyond" stage. The "into" stage activates prior knowledge. The "through" stage introduces new content and language. The "beyond" stage has students apply their new knowledge and demonstrate comprehension.

What is CBI?
It is teaching method that emphasizes learning about something rather than learning

about language.

The focus of a CBI lesson is on the topic or subject matter. Ss learn about the subject using the target language as a tool for developing knowledge and so they develop their linguistic ability in the target language.

3 Models of CBI
Sheltered model: bi-lingual program Adjunct model: ESP or EAP program Theme-based model

Framework for CBI

Into:
Students prior knowledge about a concept is probed Aim: to gain an entre into the topic, recognise the depth of prior knowledge, be better prepared for the new content materials

Through
Students encounter new content relating to the discussions of the concepts during the into stage. Aim: to practise new language skills while demonstrating their comprehension of the basic concepts

Beyond
Students demonstrate their comprehension by creatively applying their new knowledge. Aim:
(for Ss) to demonstrate both conceptual and linguistic mastery to provide a forum for communicative language practice
