Report highlights sexual victimization on college campuses

Friday Dec. 13, 2013 By: Noelle Roy As the nation sheds an increasing amount of light on sexual harassment on college campus, a study shows that three percent of college women experience a completed and/or attempted rape during a college year. University of Cincinnati professor Bonnie S. Fisher conducted the study entitled The Sexual Victimization of College Women, which reveals eyeopening statistics about assault culture on college campuses. Results The study offers a comprehensive look into the nature of sexual assault at American universities. The results are based on a random, national sample of 4,446 women who attend 2or 4-year colleges or universities. The study found that: 1.7 percent of female college students were victims of attempted rape 1.7 percent of female college students were coerced to have sex 13 percent of female college students have been stalked within the college year 60 percent of incidents took place in the victims oncampus living quarters 10 percent of incidents took place at a fraternity

The U.S. Department of Justices National Institute of Justice and the Bureau of Justice Statistics funded and released the study in partnership with Fisher. The study can be found at http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/nij/. Consequences According to the findings, Fisher estimates that a university with 10,000 female students could experience 350 rapes a year. In a more broad sense, if these numbers were applied to the United States population it would suggest that rape victimization has affected 3.5 percent of the nations population. She also found that the majority of victims do not consider their sexual assault as a crime. This understanding is derived from from feeling embarrassed, not clearly understanding the definition of rape, or not wanting to define another person as a rapist.
