Legalization of Marijuana

What is it?
Marijuana also known as weed or hemp mixture of dried leaves, seeds and stems of a Cannabis plant. THC is the prominent chemical in marijuana that gives users the feeling of being high.

History of Marijuana
The use of marijuana(hemp) was not always frowned upon. From 1600 to the late 1890s the production of hemp was encouraged. Marijuana was used for many products that was used in the civil war such as ropes. Marijuana was also used for medical products during this time. During the beginning of 1900 Mexican immigrants introduced the recreational use of marijuana. Marijuana was used recreationally until 1930, during the great depression. This is when unemployment and violence increased and many citizens blamed the mishaps on the immigrants and the drug. The Marijuana Tax Act was passed in 1937 which denied the use and possession of marijuana for recreational uses and allowed possession of marijuana for medical use to those who could afford the high taxes. In 1951, the Boggs Act and Narcotics Control Act which denied all use of marijuana.

Significance

Marijuana use for any reason is currently is illegal on a federal level, but individual states can decriminalize use for medical or recreational use. Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug. 2 states have decriminalized using marijuana for recreational use, and 20 states have legalized marijuana use for medical reasons.

A nonprofit organization that stands for the opposition of marijuana prohibition that has been in existence for more than 40 years. Provides state laws and statistics pertaining to marijuana sales and criminal activity. Provides weekly press releases for marijuana law supporters and supporting media. Provides statistics for Colorado and Washington where recreational marijuana is legal.
