ASTM D1140 Standard Test Methods For Amount of Material in Soils

This standard test method describes two methods for determining the amount of material finer than 75 micrometers (No. 200 sieve) in soils. Method 1 washes the soil specimen over the sieve without prior dispersion. Method 2 disperses the soil specimen in water with a deflocculating agent before wash sieving. The material passing through the sieve after washing is calculated as a percentage of the original sample mass and reported as the percentage finer than 75 micrometers. Accurately measuring the fine material requires wet sieving over dry sieving. Soaking some soils, especially clays, with a dispersing agent before washing keeps fine material from adhering to larger particles.
