1) This week, the student teacher took on more responsibility in the classroom, planning and teaching lessons for 75-80% of class time with less assistance from the cooperating teacher. 2) The most challenging experience was dealing with behavior management issues when fully in charge of a lesson, but addressing problems one-on-one helped strengthen relationships with students. 3) Looking ahead, the student teacher plans to take more control in assisting with upcoming units in social studies, language arts, math, and science at Valley Southwoods.

How did I spend my time this week? What responsibilities did I have? This week I have begun taking on even more responsibility than before! I would say that I have moved into 75 80 % of full time teaching. Mrs. George is still accompanying me to the General Education classrooms when I co-lab in the 4 other classrooms, but most of the talking, monitoring, assisting students, and grading has been taken over by me. During 7th and 8th periods I have begun assuming all responsibilities with planning and executing the lesson for The Freedom Writers Diary. Mrs. George still helps here and there after The Freedom Writers Diary daily journal with assisting specific students with certain homework assignments, and especially in the content area of Science which is a struggle for many of our students. I have really begun to enjoy the lesson planning process and really getting creative with probing questions and incorporating technology to really get the students thinking. I look forward to accepting even more responsibility in the coming weeks. What were my most satisfying and challenging experiences? This week I was really able to focus on some of the nitty gritty parts of what it truly takes to become a teacher. One of the most challenging things for me personally was taking on some behavior management cases with my students. On Monday, I took on the role of the sole planner and implementer of the social skill Freedom Writers Diary lesson. Because this was my first time with real control over the classroom there were a few of my students that chose not to make the best decisions and cooperate with the group. Throughout this week Mrs. George has offered me several different opportunities to really address classroom management and student behaviors head on. I think more than anything, this challenge has helped me become comfortable with confrontation, which will hopefully assist me not only as a teacher, but also in the school environment with other cooperating teachers and so forth.

Although I considered this my most challenging experience, I also found that when I took the time to speak with each of the students on a one-on-one basis, I was actually able to strengthen our own personal relationships. I found it to be extremely satisfying to see how my students are beginning to mature as they acknowledge their wrongdoings and even apologize without being told. I hope to continue growing in this area of the course of my student teaching. What are my plans for the upcoming week? As for the upcoming week, I plan on really assimilating into the role of full-time student teacher. I am looking forward to further assisting with the Olympic and China unit in Social Studies, and even starting with the students on their journey through the Odyssey for Language Arts. In math I look forward to really taking more control and continuing to assist my students with modifications and showing different ways to complete a problem as we continue to grow in the area of Pre-Algebra and learning of slope. As for Science, I am gearing up for a more challenging chemistry unit and balancing equations. I cant wait for more experience and more challenges ahead at Valley Southwoods.
