Pron 1 Allison Pron Dr.

McKool ELD 308 February 18, 2014 Reading Mini Lesson Plan (Inferencing) Grade: 4 Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.3 Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.8 Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text. Objective: Students will be able to understand the meaning of the text and make inferences by using the authors clues. Materials: The Flag We Love by Pam Munoz Ryan printed copies of the passages for the students to read from reading notebooks Procedure: 1. Lesson Introduction o Readers this past Monday was Presidents Day. Since we were talking about our country I thought this book would be interesting to learn from. Today we are going to read a few passages from The Flag We Love by Pam Munoz Ryan. Students, we are going to not only listen to the words but make interpretations to understand what the author is saying. Good readers pay close attention to the words and find clues to understand the meaning and make inferences. 2. Teach and Model (Modeling the Thinking) o Im going to read you a passage. I want you to listen to the words and follow along in your packets. I am going to demonstrate how to interpret the meaning. A seamstress stitched a banner For a country proud and new From ribbon works of red and white And a yard of deep sky blue.

Pron 2 After reading this passage I understand that the seamstress is sewing something that is red, white and blue. Since I know that the book is about our American flag, I can assume that the seamstress is working on the flag. I also know this because the author states For a country proud and new, indicating that it is going to represent our country. 3. Guided Practice (Example 1: Extensive Teacher Help) o Now its your turn. Im going to read the next passage and I want you to write down your thoughts in your readers notebook. Americans stand together Before ceremonies start And promise their allegiance With their hands across their hearts Lets look at this together. The author is implying something that Americans do together. What clues can you pick out that the author said? Students will pick out clues. Yes, when we all stand together with our hands across our hearts we are saying the pledge of allegiance. What else do we listen to before sports games or competitions? We have our hands over our hearts as well. Students will say Star Spangled Banner. Could the author possibly imply the Star Spangled Banner as well? o Example 2: Less Teacher Help Okay readers lets try another example but this time I want you to figure it out on your own. I will ask important questions but you will be able to interpret the meaning in your reading notebooks. Here is the next example. Astronauts planted a peaceful flag On a far-off, distant world Where it stands serene and silent With the Stars and Stripes unfurled The author is explaining an event here. What are the clues that can help you? Write down your thoughts. o Allow time for students to understand the passage. o Can someone share with the class what they think the author is implying? Yes, what in the passage makes you think that? The author is describing the time when the American flag was brought into space. Does anyone know who the astronaut was? 4. Independent Practice (Example 3: No Teacher Help) o Okay readers, now it is your turn to make inferences on your own. I want you to read the first chapter of your literacy circle book. What is the author saying? What clues are there? Write everything in your reading notebook. Once we have found clues and made inferences we will have a group share on our ideas.

Pron 3 5. Closure o Okay readers let me have your attention. Today we made inferences with the picture book then you went back to seats and found clues in the first chapter of your literacy circle books. Can anyone share with the rest of the class the clues and inferences you made? 6. Assessment o I will know if the lesson has been successful or not based on the interpretations that the students have said. If the students are able to understand the meaning by finding clues and supporting their ideas then it was successful. o During independent practice, I can formatively assess the students by reading their responses. If they are using clues then the lesson was successful.
