FIREWORKS

Raynee Helm & Curtis Gomez

What are fireworks?

There are six factors that must be present for a firework to exist.
Binder: Binders are used to hold the composition of a firework together. Fuel: Charcoal is the most commonly used fuel.

Oxidizing Agent: The oxidizing agent is used to create the oxygen that allows the firework to burn.

Cont

Reducing Agent: The reducing agent burns the oxygen that is created by the oxidizing agent to create gases.
Regulator: Regulators are metals that can increase the overall speed that the reaction takes place. The more surface area the metal has, the faster the reaction.

Coloring Agent: Several different chemicals are used to create fireworks of different colors. EX: Strontium=Red Copper=Blue Barium=Green Sodium=Yellow/Orange Iron=Gold

History

Firecrackers were the first fireworks that were created; going clear back to china during the Han dynasty which was around 200 B.C.E.
Firecrackers were invented long before gunpowder was even thought of. Bamboo was thought to be the first firecrackers. When someone threw them into the fire the rods sizzled and eventually turned black; after a certain amount of time the bamboo sticks would explode. Because bamboo grows extremely fast, pockets of air and sap often get trapped inside the plant. The air inside the plant expands when it is heated and ends up bursting.

Firework Safety

200 people a day go to the emergency room because of firework related injuries during the month of July.
Tips:

Dont buy fireworks that are wrapped in brown bags because this often symbolizes that they were made for professionals and can prevent a threat to users. Parental guidance is even needed for sparklers. Sparklers burn at a temperature of 2000 degrees. Do not attempt to carry fireworks in your pocket because the static electricity could light them. Do not try to re-light fireworks. Remember to spray water on fireworks after they have been lit to prevent a trash fire.

Fun facts

Animals do not like fireworks, keep them inside.

In 2010 the largest firework rocket was 13 kg and set off in Portugal. Firecrackers can be set off by the static electricity that is in synthetic clothing.

90% of all the fireworks that we use in the U.S. were created in China.
In ancient times, fireworks were used to ward off evil spirits. Of all the colors in fireworks blue is the hardest to make.

The easiest color is orange.
