HSDPA and HSUPA were introduced to enhance data rates for mobile users. HSDPA, introduced in 2005, provides downlink speeds up to 14.4 Mbps using up to 15 channelization codes. HSUPA, introduced in 2003, provides uplink speeds up to 5.76 Mbps using up to 12 channelization codes. Both technologies use advanced modulation like 16QAM to transmit more bits per symbol and achieve higher data rates in the same bandwidth.
