Artifact Reflection Artifact Title: Classroom Management Plan Date Completed: December 4, 2013 Artifact Description In the fall

of 2013, I completed a classroom management plan for my Guidance & Assessment class at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville. The classroom management plan consists of a statement of purpose, classroom rules, procedures, positive/negative consequences, crisis plan, and an action plan. Wisconsin Teaching Standard Alignment This artifact addresses Wisconsin Teaching Standard 5: Teachers know how to manage a classroom. The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. This artifact best aligns with Standard 5 because it is a well-designed classroom management plan that supports the foundation of the classroom and focuses on the procedures and guidelines used to create a safe environment. While writing this management plan, I have learned an abundant amount of strategies and methods through experience in the classrooms. An example of my understanding of classroom management is the Traffic Light Behavior Chart. This chart is a method used daily to help manage a students b ehavior. When the student is on green, they are fine, a yellow is a warning, and a red results in either time from recess or free time. I have used or have seen this chart used in past experience in the schools and it is quite effective. For instance, there was a time where a boy would not do his worksheet and after a few verbal warnings and reminders, he had to go from a green to a yellow and he soon then completed his worksheet because he realized the consequences of his actions if he did not participate. This chart is a great tool for group behavior and motivation because it helps manage the class as a whole and it motivates them to have a more positive behavior by rewarding them with praise and acknowledgement. It also helps the students with social interaction and engagement by encouraging them to interact with each other by reminding one another about the classroom rules and influencing each other in a more positive way. This chart is also self-motivating because it lets the students push themselves to be better students by showing how they are behaving throughout the day and knowing it can motivate them to behave better by using positive reinforcement. Another example of my understanding classroom management is the positioning of tables and seating of students in a classroom to maximize learning and minimize misbehavior. I have had to do this multiple times in my pre-student teaching classroom to achieve individual and group motivation for a higher learning experience and to establish positive behavior among the students. Repositioning the students was also a good way for

students to become more social with each other to help create that interaction and active engagement at each table. Some repositioning involved differentiation of the ability of students so that they would work with each other and help each other with social interaction and self-motivation. With this experience, I have gained more skill in this standard because it has taught me an effective way to manage a classroom. Having this ability allows me to create a classroom that is focused on order and structure, resulting in student success.

This artifact best aligns with KSD2.d. Manages Student Behavior - The candidate can

establish clear standards of conduct with student input. The monitoring of these standards is subtle and preventive with respectful student self- and peer monitoring also occurring. The candidate can respond to misbehavior effectively, being sensitive to individual needs. This artifact addresses KSD2.d. because it allowed me to explore my understanding of an appropriate management plan and take the previous experience I had to help create a more reliable and successful management plan. Using strategies from this management plan also allowed me to demonstrate a sense of order in the classroom and a way to keep the students on a daily behavioral routine. With different strategies used from this plan, students learned about responsibility by listening to classroom rules, understanding how to behave properly, and it taught them how to be more independent through the self-monitoring of their behavior. After this experience, I have gained a higher sense of proficiency because I had the chance to demonstrate how to use this management plan in order to manage student behavior and keep them involved throughout the day. I was able to modify some classroom rules and procedures due to a students behavior, such as table positioning or moving students t o maximize their learning experience. Secondary KSDs: KSD2.b. Establishes a Culture for Learning KSD2.c. Manages Classroom Procedures KS2.e. Organizes Physical Space Reflection What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience: From this experience, I have learned a great deal of strategies regarding classroom management. From learning how to create a well-developed classroom management plan to applying those different strategies in a classroom setting to see what methods work and dont

Artifact Reflection work. With this management plan, I have learned how to handle student behavior, give instructed classroom procedures, and learned the effects of positive and negative consequences. Overall, I have learned how to be an effective and successful teacher in a learning environment that is safe and educational for students. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience: As a result of this experience, I have learned that classroom management is very important to my role as an educator because it helps me create a safe and positive learning environment. I have also learned that it is important for teachers to have students help in creating the classroom rules to increase their own knowledge about the rules and procedures so they have a better understanding of them and so they follow the rules. As a prospective educator, it is important to have a classroom management plan that I can use to model; good behavior, respect for others, listening skills, social interaction, and responsibility so that my students will learn to do the same.
