What are signs of spring? We will have a class discussion about what so6e signs of
spring could be!
How do we observe? *tudents will be given science 5ournals to record what they
see while on the nature walk7 what they notice about their
plants7 and what they notice about the butterflies!
How do we record? #fter the nature walk we will discuss how they would
described their walk and what they wrote and drew! $hey
will do the sa6e for plants and butterflies!
How do seeds grow? We will plant seeds and talk about what they will need to
grow!

*tudents will have prior knowledge of what words are used to describe spring fro6 previous
lessons! $hey should also have so6e ideas about what can be signs of spring fro6 previous
personal e9periences!

Lesson beginning
We will have a general class discussion about what spring 6eans to each student! We will then
talk about how scientists observe everything around the6 and take notes! $his will lead into
telling the class that we will be going outside and taking notes on what we see while walking
around!
Instructional Plan
1! $he students will be led on an outside walk around the school! $hey will take notes and draw
pictures on anything they hear7 see7 s6ell7 feel7 etc! $hey will also be given goggles7 5ust like
real scientists!
-! $he students will co6e back and discuss the infor6ation that they have gathered!
1! $he students will then have ti6e to go observe their own plants that are currently growing in
the class! $hey will take notes on this as well!
:! We will have a discussion about why plants usually grow in the spring co6pared to other
seasons!
! /inally7 the students will observe the caterpillars;butterflies and plants in the roo6 and record
infor6ation about what they observe! $his will be a routine for the6 to do every day before
the unit!
<! $he students will also do a craft that will be displayed in the roo6!
Differentiation
$he students will be given e9a6ples of what to look for while on the nature walk! $he option to
draw or write in the science 5ournal is also for differentiation for students who can easily write
what they see7 and for those who will have trouble writing their thoughts!
Questions
What are signs of spring that we e9perienced today? What do we notice about our plants? What
do we notice about the caterpillars? What does observing 6ean? What does recording 6ean?
Classroom Management
While taking the nature walk7 the teachers and aids will 6ake sure that all students stay focused!
't will always be 6ade clear that this should be 3%&= serious7 5ust like real scientists! 'f anyone
6isbehaves7 they will be asked to go back inside or wait on a bench and wait for the rest of the
class to be done!

$o transition fro6 inside to outside7 students will be asked to line up by table! $ables will also be
called to go up and observe plants and caterpillars!

/lower7 and he will read the class a poe6 about spring! $his will lead into the ne9t day7 which
will be based on poetry!
