1970 : Large zinc deposit was discovered 3km from Navan

1977: Tara mines began to mine the deposit

Lead and zinc ores exported via Dublin to smelters in Norway
and Finland
Tara mines employed 670 people in 2008

The mine is a major boost to the economy
with housing sales, restaurants and shops

Development of infrastructure


Navan has also become a dormitory/residential
town for people working in Dublin


Due to this Navans population has doubled
between 2001 and 2006
Since the 1960s the Irish government has
invited MNCs ( multi national companies) to
locate in Ireland

Tax incentives were offered to these MNCs to
establish in Ireland and create jobs

One example of where companies set up
factories is Clarecastle in Co. Clare
Anglo Normans built a castle making it a defensive
settlement

Became a Garrison town for British soldiers until Ireland won
its independence in 1922
