Grade 5 May/June Newsletter

Language Arts
The fifth grade classes are
working on writing memoirs.
They are using what they know
about writing personal narratives, and
digging deeper to come up with something
they learned during the experience. In
reading, students are participating in
Literature Circles. These book groups read
novels and share their thoughts and
experiences. Additionally, all children are
working on reading and writing poetry about
a theme they chose.
Social Studies
The classes are finishing their
study of the American
evolution with !ower!oint presentations
they created. "ur next unit of study will be
the formation of the #.$. government.
$tudents will learn about the Constitution,
branches of government, and the
responsibilities at the federal, state, and
local levels.
Mathematics
%e have been working on
a variety of topics over the last month,
including coordinate graphs, order of
operations, exponential notation, negative
numbers, line plots, converting
measurements, organi&ing data, and
volume. The remainder of the year will be
dedicated to problem solving and data
organi&ation related to real world situations.
Science
In science, students are
finishing their study of weather. They are
reviewing topics they learned from
'indergarten through fifth grade to prepare
for $cience (CA$. At the end of the month,
we will move our studies outside and
participate in environmental education at %.
