Properties of Multiplication

The document describes properties of multiplication, including the commutative property which states that the order of factors does not change the product, the associative property which states that grouping does not change the product, the identity property which states that multiplying a number by 1 yields the original number, the property of zero which states that multiplying a number by 0 yields 0, and the property of opposites which states that multiplying a number by -1 yields the opposite of the number.

Properties of Multiplication

Commutative Property
The order in which two numbers are
multiplied doesn’t change the product.

a∙b=b∙a

Ex: 3 ∙ 2 = 2 ∙ 3
Associative Property
The way you group three numbers when
multiplying doesn’t change the product

a ∙ (b ∙ c) = (a ∙ b) ∙ c

EX: 3 ∙ (2 ∙5) = (3 ∙ 2) ∙5
Identity Property
The product of 1 and a number is the
number.

1∙a=a

Ex: 1 ∙ 7 = 7
Property of zero
The product of a number and zero is zero.

0∙a=0

ex: 0 ∙ 9 = 0
Property of Opposites
The product of a number and -1 is the
opposite of the number.

(-1) ∙ a = -a

Ex: (-1)(3) = -3
