Social Changes

Population
Population of Europe grew faster from 1850 to
1914 than it ever has.
Doubled from 265 million to 468 million.
Increase came from decrease in death rate as
epidemics starvation became less common.
Migration
Indians went to Africa, Southeast Asia, and other tropical
British colonies.
Chinese emigrates to Southeast Asia and the East Indies.
After African slacks were emancipated in the Caribbean,
Indian and Chinese workers were brought in to replace
them.
Japanese migrates to Brazil and other parts of Latin
America,
Many Chinese as well as Japanese and Filipinos went to
Hawaii and California
Urbanization
In 1851 Britain became the First Nation with a
majority of its population living in towns and cities.
1914 80% of Britain's population was urban. In
Germany 60%, France 45%.
London grew from 2.7 million to 6.6 million in fifty
years (1850-1900).
New York grew from 64,000 to 3.4 million in one
hundred years (1800-1900).
Urban Environment
London, New York and Chicago were fast growing
cities, where people arrived so quickly, that
housing construction and municipal services
couldn't keep up.
Neighborhoods became over crowded and cities
were divided into commercial, industrial and
residential zones all occupied by different social
classes.
Thanks to urban environments, air pollution
dramatically increased.
