Properties
The Distributive Property says that multiplying a number with a sum is the same as multiplying
each addend by the number and adding the product together. Ex: 3(53)=3(50)+3(3)
The Commutative Property allows for the order of addends to be changed without the answer
being affected. Ex: 3+4=4+3, 3(4)=4(3)
The Associative Property allows for the grouping of numbers to be changed without affecting the
result of the problem. Ex: (3+4)6=(6+3)4

Simplifying Expressions
To simplify the expression 4(7x - 3) + 2x, you first must use the
distributive property to multiply the numbers in parentheses.
21x - 12 + 2x. Now combine like terms
23x - 12. The expression is now simplified.

Solving Multistep Equation
7x - 10 - 9x = -13. First combine the like terms.
-2x - 10 = -13. Now isolate the variable by adding 10
-2x = -13. Isolate the variable again by dividing both sides of the
equation by -2.
X = 6.5

Inequalities with Fractions
5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6
First, make all fractions equal
5x + 2x - 3 = 11 Now, combine like terms
7x - 3 = 11 isolate the variable by adding 3 to both sides
7x = 14 divide both sides by 7
x = 2

Inequality
2 ! x / -5
First isolate the variable by multiplying x by -5.
Now multiply 2 by -5 because whatever you do to one side you
must do to the other.
Multiplying or dividing a number in an inequality by a negative
number causes the sign to switch sides. Now the inequality is
10 " x This is the solution.

Inequality 2
-4x + 4 " -8
First, subtract 4 form both sides.
-4x " -8 Now, divide both sides by -4.
x ! 2 This is the answer

Circles
When graphing inequalities, an open circle signifies that the
number it is above is not part of the solution set.
A closed circle signifies that the number it is above is part of the
solution set.

Word Problems
12x ! 160 Isolate the variable by dividing both sides by 12
x ! 13.3... Round down.
13 weeks
1/3x ! 25 Multiply both sides by 3
3x ! 75 Divide both sides by three
x ! 75
