This week in FLK-3

We celebrated Vanessa Ms 5
th
Birthday!!

And
We celebrated Madelyns 6
th
Birthday!!

Happy Birthdays ladies!!

In Language: We worked in smaller homogeneous groups again. Some of us
reviewed the reading buddies studied so far Lips the Fish, Stretchy the Snake,
Eagle Eye, Flip the Dolphin, Skippy the Frog, and Chunky Monkey. We learned about
Trying Lion who reminds us to try to make sense of what we are reading. We met
our last reading buddy, Helpful Kangaroo who reminds us IF we have tried ALL the
other buddies, to ask an adult for help. We practiced printing the lowercase

a,d,g by beginning with the magic C or the Caterpillar C. Some of us continued
learning the sounds of the letters and the letter names.
We began a Nature Journal. We found an item from nature outside and wrote
about why it intrigued us. The results the writing part as well as the thinking
part! - were GREAT!!!
As a whole group, we blended consonant vowel consonant words. We worked on
popcorn words. We rhymed and counted syllables.
Our Star Students this week were: Sienna, Peyton, Vanessa H, Ayla and Sophie.
Excellent jobs by all!!!!
Gym: We played Leap Frog, and musical lilly pads. We played What time is it Mr.
Wolf using a clock and Totally IT Tag. HILARIOUS!!!!
In Religion: We celebrated the Spring nature around us as signs of
God.discussed and even wrote about it in our nature journals!
Science: the tadpoles are still swimming! Whew! We discussed how the mouth is
changing.you can see the little round tadpole mouth AND the outline of the adult
frog mouth that goes from one side of the jaw to the other. Very cool!!
We also went to Mrs. Woollings room and saw the butterflies that came out of
their chrysalis that very morning! We learned about the life cycle of the butterfly.
We watched our 60 tomato plants. There are green sprouts in severl pots!
In Fine Motor Development: Mrs. Hennessey continues to work with several
children in small groups to increase fine motor strength and dexterity as well as
gross motor strength. She is also working with small computer groups in the
Library. Some are keyboarding and others are practicing specific skills they need
more drill with.
In Art: This week Miss Evans had the children draw what they believed to be in
the mysterious treasure chest that has been sitting in the classroom all week! The
children were allowed to draw in pencils, markers or crayons, whatever they chose
as an art medium. The only guideline was that they needed to make their own
predictions.

In Music, Drama and Dance: This week during Inquiry the word pretend was
being said by children all over the classroom. This imaginary play is the childrens
own interpretation of Drama through which they are exploring the world around
them. Additionally, during this stage of play, the children are learning to work
collaboratively with one another in a natural setting and through their own play and
initiative!
In Mathematics: We worked in whole groups and smaller groups for Math this
week. We all learned about the number placement on a clock and about the hour
hand and the minute hand. We practiced making a clock of our own and began
learning time to the hour. The first years counted and practiced printing and
recognizing our numbers 0 to 10. We practiced counting one object at a time. The
second years worked on number stories and began simple addition.

In Personal and Social Development: Miss Evans explicitly revisited the STOP
THINK and DO system. This week there has also been a reminder to all of the
children that they are empowered enough to work through problems with friends
on their own! The children have been so full of pride when they have worked their
way through a problem, which is always wonderful to see yet more importantly;
they are building the tools that they will need to be effective problem solvers in
the future!
In Inquiry/Directed Play: Miss Evans is working with individual Stars to document
an Inquiry investigation. The results are stunning! Also, Miss Evans brought in a
treasure chest and simply placed it on the tadpole table and left it at that. It has
been amazing to watch the children as they walk up to it and examine the chest
without opening it. For some reason, there has been a strict do not touch policy
implemented by the children themselves which seems to have only heightened the
interest in what lays inside even more. Stay tuned for what does lay inside the
treasure chest in the coming week!
