Argument Essay Outline


(1 Introduction, 2 Body Paragraphs, 1 Conclusion)



INTRODUCTION

An interesting hook to grab the readers attention (question, quote, interesting fact/statement)
Brief background on what the argument is about (1-2 sentences)
Generally acknowledge that your side has many negatives or positives (1 sentence)
o Example: However, there are many negatives that result from eating fast food.
State your claim (1 sentence)
Sum up the 2 reasons from the left side of the I-chart, need to re-word from what is stated in
the article (1-2 sentences)
Closing sentence to wrap up

**Make sure to include transitions between sentences/ideas



EACH BODY PARAGPRAH INCLUDES:

Transition word to flow into the paragraph, followed by your topic sentence (this is your
reasoning from the left side of the I-chart, must re-word from what is stated in the article)
Transition word to flow into your evidence
o Should be giving at least 2 pieces of evidence per 1 reason (make sure you cite your
evidence!)
o Can split evidence into multiple sentences
Example: Furthermore, the bodys circadian rhythm shifts during
adolescence. Therefore, this shift makes it hard for adolescents to go to
sleep early.
Closing sentence to wrap up each body paragraph




CONCLUSION

Transition word into counterclaim, state counterclaim
Transition word and then re-state claim in a different way
Re-word, re-state your reasons (1-2 sentences)
Closing sentence that wraps up your essay (this can be 1-2 sentences); there are 3 different
ways to close below:
o Bold Statement
Offer a consequence if your claim isnt followed
Offer a benefit if your claim is followed
o Call to Action
Ex: Support your local zoo today!
o End with an everlasting question or idea



POINTS TO REMEMBER:
1. A quality paragraph is 4-7 sentences long
2. You, we, our, I those words may only be used in the first sentence, the claim and the last
sentence of this essay: this is a formal essay
