1. What real knowledge do you know of your field and area?

a. What do you need to know and be able to do


i. basic skills required for production
-Design knowledge, Programs like Adobe CS
ii. advanced or focused skills for production
- Print process, brainstorming, design process
iii. understand various approaches and workflow/processes
- Ready study cases of other designers, documentaries
iv. have a historical perspective on your field and its evolution
- how it all started with the type of styles and where its leading with
new technologies like smart phone, app design, etc.
v. understand the nature of the products you create
- by actually trying to build the product and experience the
development process either on your own or internship.
b. Mental habits you need to develop
i. Curiosity about other peoples perspective of your field
-Checking out study cases, documentaries, websites, books
ii. Read to get more substance and identify the growth of your field
- Books from artist, communication arts, blogs, computer arts,
iii. Keep up with developments in your field in and outside of your
area
- Network, conventions, meet and greets, web, blogs
2. Think technically and creatively
a. What do you need to know and be able to do
i. Distinguish good design from bad design
ii. Understand the limitations and potentials of your tools
iii. Look into other fields and areas, seeking connections that are not
obvious at first
iv. Compare across traditions of production and design
b. Mental habits you need to develop
i. Have humility to respect prior work, courage to question
accumulated wisdom
ii. Be aware of ones own assumptions and have the disposition to
examine those critically
iii. Discriminate between knowledge and belief
iv. Be willing to change ones mind based on argument or evidence
