Blanchard Grinding

Blanchard grinding is a rotary surface grinding technique that quickly removes material from large parts using a grinding wheel mounted on a vertical spindle that moves counter to a magnetic chuck holding the workpiece. It can achieve high tolerances of ±0.001" with surface finishes down to 16 Ra. While typically used on ferrous metals held by magnetic chucks, it can also grind non-ferrous materials and plastics using vacuum chucks. Blanchard grinding is well-suited to machining large parts in production runs due to its ability to uniformly grind multiple parts simultaneously.

Blanchard Grinding

Blanchard Grinding, technically referred to as Rotary Surface Grinding, quickly

removes stock from one side of a parttypically a part too large to be Double-Disc
Ground is Blanchard ground.
In a Blanchard grinding machine, the grinding wheel is
mounted on a vertical spindle, and moves in a direction
counter to the rotation of the magnetic chuck. Before
grinding, surfaces should be relatively even, without any
significant protrusions.
Using significantly greater horsepower than other
grinding methods, Blanchard Grinding removes large amounts of stock quickly and
efficiently. Dimensional tolerances to .001", parallelism to .001", and flatness to
.001" are achievable on Blanchard Grinders. Most Blanchard Grinding operations
is able to provide parts with surface finishes to 16 Ra.
Typically, ferrous metals are subjected to the Blanchard
grinding process, since the part is often held in place by a
magnetic chuck as it is ground. It is, however, possible to
use Blanchard grinding on non-ferrous metals and even
plastics, but production rates tend to be lower and costs are
higher (due to added setup time). Using vacuum chucks,
even thin, hard to hold configurations can be Blanchard
Ground.
Due to the design and operation of a Blanchard grinding machine, it will grind
different work pieces to a uniform size, a benefit for extensive production runs.
Blanchard Grinding is ideal for large parts such as rotary tables, mold plates, and
vacuum chambers, and machine housings. Blanchard Grinding adds size
versatility, eliminates mis-
matches, and speeds
turnaround time on large
parts when compared to
flycutting. This method
provides a considerable
time savings over surface
grinding as well. Pre-
machining costs and
turnaround time can be reduced by simultaneously Blanchard Grinding multiple
parts. Multiple part grinding, along with cutting a large, Blanchard Ground blank
into smaller parts, provides uniform part-to-part thickness tolerances and surface
finishes at a lower unit cost.
