Lesson Two

Simon Davies provides a summary of a golf coaching session with Tom. The main points covered were ball and body positioning for pitch shots. Simon recommends Tom position the ball slightly back of center, with hands forward and left foot pointed outwards for better consistency and release. Simon also discusses keeping the speed and length of the body turn consistent on pitch shots to control distance and backspin. Simon asks Tom to practice three pitch shot positions - "7 to 5", "9 to 3", and "11 to 1" - with his 56, 52 and pitching wedges to develop yardages within 100 yards.

Hi Tom,

Great performance today. You took all my advice on board and put it into
practice with some magnificent shots.

Just to recap on the main points from today's session;

Set Up;
• Ball position slightly backwards of centre
• Hands forward ensuring a downward strike on the ball and
improving the consistency of the strike
• Left foot pointed outwards 30 degrees giving the body more room to
aid release
• Ensure that the alignment is correct, you have a tendency for your
body to aim right of target when it should be parallel left (remember the
train tracks from last session)

Technique;
• The body controls a pitch shot, not the hands
• Keep the speed of the body turn the same with every pitch shot to
produce consistent distances
• Ensure that the length of swing is the same during the backswing
and follow through, e.g. "9 to 3" as opposed to "9 to 1" or "9 to 5"

However, as we experimented in the session if you change the speed of

the body turn through impact, the distance the ball travels changes and
the amount of backspin produced.

In terms of the length of swing produced, imagine a clock face and your
arms are the minute hand of the clock. This will help you to produce the
correct length of swing for the shot in hand.
The first swing we practiced was the drill we worked on in our last session
with the arms at "7 to 5" where the club head is opposite the hands and
the shaft of the club is parallel to the ground.

The next swing we practised was "9 to 3". The arms should be straight at
a 90 degree angle to body.

The third pitching position was nearly a full swing "11 to 1". When
practicing this position really focus on maintaining a smooth and
controlled body turn due to the increased length of swing.

Practice these three positions with your 56, 52 and pitching wedge. This
will straight away give you 9 yardages to use from within 100 yards.

Next Session;

We will build on the session from today and develop pitching further next
week.

For our next session if possible I would like you to have a yardage for the
three positions we worked on today with your 3 wedges as we will be
getting very specific with the positions and develop more yardages.

Hope you enjoyed today's session, Keep up the good work!!

Regards,

Simon
