Unit 69 Task 4

By Jordan Edge
Intended Purpose
This project required me to use various different
techniques and methods in order to create a
design for a game based off of a film. For this
you had to first choose a film, I chose the film
Metropolis, I thought this film would be a good
idea to twist off of because it includes a large
city and advanced animatronics which would
add a unique and interesting flair.
Above is a few images collected from the film i have chosen, from these pictures i can get a general idea
of how the surrounding environment would look. These pictures show me that the environment should
have layers of tall biuldings that reach high into the sky. The structures should be somewhat abstract
and individual.
Here I have compiled a few images that portray the type of artistic style i want the environment and robots in the city
to look like, I want there to be less sophisticated manual labour made robots and more domesticated human like
andriods that assist people in day to day life. For example the robot in the middle would be used to move around large
objects over short distances and the robot on the right would be more of a security or law enforcing robot.
After getting an idea of what I wanted the art style to be like I started getting an idea of what i wanted
the premis of the city, its enhabitants and what kind of technological era it would be in. I decided that
since the film metropolis is large city that features a robot that I would have a futuristic secluded
floating city powered by clean energy that is inhabited by intellignt A.I. and Humans living in harmony
depending on one another.
Plot
The plot of the game goes as follows, following the outbreak of a potential
nuclear apocalypse a city and its inhabitants flee to the sky sick and tired of
the pain and suffering of the world. Their city over time has become the most
technologically advanced place in the world focussing solely on the sciences
and solving key health issues and increasing life expectancy to inhabitants
living to be almost 200. Moving on to 100's of years later when the humans
are begining to deminish the robots are left alone without purpose. The final
human on the tells the robots to seek out the rest of humanity and share
what they have found so that they may relish in their advancements.
You play as the leader of the remaining robots, your objective is to turn off
the power that has been keeping you afloat for years and begin the journey
back to earth. Once landed you are met with mutated monsters and a
decrepit post apocolytic wasteland. You then have to collected resources to
biuld machines and vehicles to help your pregression towards finding
humanity. Because of your indepth knowledge you can fix yourself with scrap
metal and biuld weapons to defend yourself in the 'wastes'.
Older Designs
Here are some early designs I came up with, as you can see I kept with
the two different types of A.I. and a floating civilisations.
Above I have drawn a hand held stun knife, this is a craftable weapon made
from a shovel handle, oversized arrow head and some technology from their
city to make it energized. There is also a sword that can be found just as you
leave the city to enter the wastes, here it is on the right. I wanted it to look
dull and fairly old but no so old that it'd be broken.
Characters
Above I have drawn a character who will be solely know as "mer'chant". He is a
friendly mutant one of few you can find throughout the world, he is a merchant who
will trade you various objects for food. Considering you dont require food it is a great
choice for currency. On the picture next to him there is the main character and
another friendly character which lives in an abandoned garage. He will craft you
vehicles and fix things if you fetch him materials.
Above I have drawn a more recent design of what the city
would look like as it was landing, the area should be baron
and deserted to show the seclusion that they are now in.
Visual communications
Now i have these images I can express to an
audience the type of look i want to show.
Because i have compiled a good number of
images i can thouroughly present my ideas to
another person so they can also get a good idea
of what im looking for.
Constraints
When basing a game off of another persons
product there can be many constrictions, one of
course would be possible copy right claims
another would be turning the product into a
game but it not being so different from the
product that the fans of said product get
offended and dont buy it like many fans do.
Client Brief
The client brief is a guideline that you use when
working so that you know what you're supposed
to be doing and that you're not doing it wrong.
The client brief contains everything teh client
wants for example the brief for this task
required us to create a game based around a
game that featured several mood boards and
designs. Knowing this i have been able to follow
out the clients wishes.
Target Audience
The target audience for my game would be males aged 16
- 22 this is the average age for male gamers that would
play a game that has an indepth story other than a
thrilling multiplayer experience. When trying to aim for
this audience the game has to start quick, be entertaining
and not drag on tutorials too much. Many games have
lost much recognition due to the start being too long or
boring for the audience to want to sit through. My target
audience are people who are into sci-fi so i would need to
aim my focus at what they'd like the most, as an avid Sci-
fi fan I know that energy weapons, robots, flying things,
monsters and blowing stuff up are key points that sci fi
gamers look for.
Ethical Constraints
Ethically this game doesnt have much offence
towards many things. However there could be a
concern over the 'Cyborgs' due to the fact taht
some religions believe that adding or taking away
from your body means you wont recieve passage
into heaven. Other than that I dont think that there
are any racist, sexist or offensive scenes, there is
scenes of violence and possible gore which could be
a moral issue but because the amount of violence in
the game depends on how the player decides they
want to act then I see no ethical issues.
Evaluation
I have now shown a detailed example of what my
game will be like. I feel if given more time i could've
designed more detailed pictures that would give a
more detailed example. I think that the designs I
have fit the purpose and look interesting as well as
filling the brief. I feel that what ive made isnt as
good as what other peoples are but I know with
more time I could improve and create a better
visual image.
