The LORD tells Abram not to be afraid and that he will be Abram's shield and great reward. God tells Abram that his descendants will be slaves in a foreign land for 400 years but will then leave with great possessions. God establishes a covenant with Abram, promising the land from Egypt to the Euphrates River to his descendants. The LORD calls on Jerusalem to give themselves no rest until Jerusalem is established and praised. God promises to no longer give the people's grain and wine to their enemies, and that those who gather the harvest will eat and praise the LORD in his sanctuary. The LORD proclaims to prepare the way for his people and the redemption of Zion.

After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision:

"Do not be afraid, Abram.


I am your shield,
your very great reward.
hen the LORD said to him, "!now for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not
their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. "ut I will #unish the nation they
serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great #ossessions. $ou, however, will go to your
fathers in #eace and be buried at a good old age. In the fourth generation your descendants will come
bac% here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure."
&hen the sun had set and dar%ness had fallen, a smo%ing fire#ot with a bla'ing torch a##eared and
#assed between the #ieces. On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "o your
descendants I give this land, from the river of (gy#t to the great river, the (u#hrates) the land of the,
*anaanites, +irgashites and ,ebusites.
I have #osted watchmen on your walls, O ,erusalem-
they will never be silent day or night.
$ou who call on the LORD,
give yourselves no rest,
and give him no rest till he establishes ,erusalem
and ma%es her the #raise of the earth.
he LORD has sworn by his right hand
and by his mighty arm:
".ever again will I give your grain
as food for your enemies,
and never again will foreigners drin% the new wine
for which you have toiled-
but those who harvest it will eat it
and #raise the LORD,
and those who gather the gra#es will drin% it
in the courts of my sanctuary."
