Inquiry Project Lesson Plan
Essential Question: How do audience and purpose affect writing?

Objective: to read an article, analyze point of view, sentence structure, style, and
audience.

CCSS Standards:
-ELA-LITERACY.RI.9-10.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support
analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
-ELA-LITERACY.RI.9-10.2 Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its
development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped
and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
-ELA-LITERACY.RI.9-10.5 Analyze in detail how an author's ideas or claims are
developed and refined by particular sentences, paragraphs, or larger portions of a
text (e.g., a section or chapter).
-ELA-LITERACY.RI.9-10.6 Determine an author's point of view or purpose in a
text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or
purpose.
-ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the
development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and
audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards
1-3 above.)

Timeline:
1. Groups are randomly or strategically assigned.
2. Read the article together.
3. Answer the questions as a group. All members write the answers too.
4. Each student will be assigned a different paragraph from the article to do the
following copy change assignments.
Copy-change #1: Change the point of view (1st, 2nd, 3rd limited)
Copy-change #2: Change the intended audience (parent, teen, small children).
5. Turn in Article Analysis worksheet (with the two copy-change assignments attached).


Materials Needed:
-copies of the worksheet
-copies of articles (we used Rocked from Field and Stream, July 2014, A Day in the
Life of Your Knee from Readers Digest, January 2014, and Potato-salad Rookie Raises
Thousands on Kickstarter from CNN.com, 7 July 2014)

5. How does the sentence length and sentence type affect the audience for whom you are
writing? Provide specific evidence from the text.


6. How does the level of vocabulary affect the audience for whom you are writing?
Provide specific evidence from the text.

7. Which paragraph of the article are you going to copy change? (Remember to use the
same paragraph for both copy-change activities.)

8. Copy-change #1: Change the point of view (1st person/ different narrator, 2nd person,
or 3rd person limited). Rewrite the paragraph here or on a separate piece of paper.
