Worksheet 3-4
Worksheet 3-4
Vocabulary
Standard form (of a linear equation in two variables) The equation of a line written as
Ax + By = C, where A, B, and C are integers, and A and B are not both zero.
Point-slope form The equation of a line written as y — y\ = m(x — x^) where
m is the slope and (xj, y{) is a point on the line.
Example 1 Find an equation in standard form of the line containing the point
(1, —5) and having slope — —.2
2
Solution Use the point-slope form with (jcj, y^) — (1, —5) and m = — — .
y - yl = m(x - x{)
y _ (_5) = _|_ ( J C _ 1
[Multiply both sides by 3
3(y + 5) = -2(x - 1) [to clear the fractions.
3y + 15 = -2x + 2
2x + 3y = -13
Find an equation in standard form of the line containing point P and having slope m.
1. P(4, 1), m = -1 2. P(3, 0), m = -2 3. P(-2, 1), m = 0 4. P(-l, -3), m = 3
5. P(-2, 2), m = ~ 6. P(2, -1), m = — 7. P(3, 4), m = - — 8. P(-l, 5), m = 0.2
Example 2 Find an equation in standard form of the line containing (2, - 3) and (- 1, 2).

3y + 9 = -5x + 10 3y - 6 = -5x - 5
5* + 3y = 1 5x + 3y = 1
Find an equation in standard form of the line containing the given points.
