Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 4. USING DEVELOPMENTALLY EFFECTIVE APPROACHES
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that teaching and learning
with young children is a complex enterprise, and its details vary depending on childrens ages,
characteristics, and the settings within which teaching and learning occur. They understand and
use positive relationships and supportive interactions as the foundation for their work with young
children and families. Candidates know, understand, and use a wide array of developmentally
appropriate approaches, instructional strategies, and tools to connect with children and families
and positively influence each childs development and learning. (NAEYC, 2010)
Brief Description of Evidence:
As part of my ECED 243 Cognitive Curriculum course during the fall semester of 2013, I
completed the brain project which included two different types of observations (one in a
licensed center and the other unlicensed), three child assessments, a teacher made activity kit,
activity implementation, completed a unit framework, and wrote a final reflection paper over it
all.
Analysis of What I Learned:
As a result of completing this project, I learned how to build meaningful, challenging
curriculum for each child in my classroom and complete observations in different types of
centers. I made a kit of 15 teacher made activities and implemented my activities with a group
of children.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
In completing all of this I have learned how to build meaningful curriculum by designing
and implementing challenging curriculum for each child. I used Gardners multiple intelligences
theory to think about the different types of learners there are while creating my activities. I
understand that learning is complex and depends on the childs age, characteristics, and setting. I
created my activities for all types of learners. I am confident in my ability to use
developmentally appropriate practices while teaching children.
