Cricket

India's national cricket team played its first test match in 1932 and became the sixth team granted test status. In its first fifty years of international cricket, India was generally one of the weaker teams, winning only 25 of the 190 test matches played during that period. However, the team gained strength in the 1970s with players like batsmen Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath, all-rounder Kapil Dev, and the Indian spin quartet emerging. Traditionally much stronger playing at home than abroad, the Indian team has improved its overseas performances since the start of international cricket.
