As1.2: Algebraic Substitution: Examples

The document discusses algebraic substitution, which is replacing a variable in an algebraic expression with a number to evaluate the expression. It provides examples of evaluating expressions by substituting values for variables. Formulas are given to convert between temperatures in Fahrenheit and Celsius. Exercises are included to evaluate expressions by substituting given values into variables. The answers to the exercises are provided at the end.

AS1.2: ALGEBRAIC SUBSTITUTION
The process of replacing a pronumeral (or variable or letter) in an expression or formula with a number is called
substitution.

It is then possible to evaluate the algebraic expression.

Examples

1. Evaluate 3p if p = -5

3p = 3 p
= 3 -5
= -15

2. Evaluate
b
a 5 +
if a = -9 and b = 2

b
a 5 +
=
2
5 9+

=
2
4

= -2

3. Evaluate w - 2z if w = -1, z = 5

w - 2z = (-1) - 2 5
= 1 10
= -9

4. Use the formula C =
5( 32)
9
F
to convert a temperature of 100
o
in the
Fahrenheitsystem to Centigrade.

C =
5( 32)
9
F

=
5(100 32)
9

=
5(68)
9

= 37.78
