Inquiry Sequence

This document outlines a 4 lesson science unit for a Year 2 class of 17 students focused on ocean zones and ocean animals. Lesson 1 introduces the different ocean zones and living creatures in each zone. Lesson 2 covers the difference between predators and prey and teaches research skills. Lesson 3 has students continue researching their selected sea animal. Lesson 4 has students create posters about ocean animals using information from their research. The lessons aim to teach students about ocean environments and the relationships between living things through class discussions, worksheets, and individual research projects.

For Learning

To learn about the different zones in the ocean and identify the living creatures in each zone.
Earths resources, including water, are used in a variety of ways (ACSSU032)
ELA 19.EC.9 some of the ways in which living things depend on their environment and each other
(e.g. basic needs for survival).
ELA 20.EC.1 elements of the natural environment that humans, animals and plants need for
survival.
ELA 20.EC.2 different living things in their local environment and some observable relationships
between living things and their environment.
ELA 5.EC.4 listen actively when working in groups.
Students can orally name each ocean zones explaining the differences in each. Contributing to class
discussion and completing the worksheet.

The students have previously been learning about water, leading onto a general look at some water
animals.
Students will continue to strengthen this knowledge choosing a sea animal for their research
project in lessons to come. This lesson will focus on ocean zones.

ELA 2.LC.10 conduct searches for information and use a range of sources (e.g. information texts,
artefacts, maps, images).
Students can orally explain the differences between predators and prey giving examples of animals.
Contributing to class discussion and starting research for their project.

The students have previously been learning about water. Last lesson students learned about the
different ocean levels.
Students will continue to strengthen this knowledge by researching a sea animal for their project
and learning about prey and predators.
