Spelling Rules

This document summarizes spelling rules for doubling consonants, dropping final 'e's, and changing final 'y' and 'ce/ge' when adding suffixes in English. It notes that for one-syllable words ending in a single consonant, the consonant is doubled before a vowel suffix. For two- or three-syllable words stressed on the final syllable, the final consonant is also doubled before a vowel suffix. Final 'e' is dropped before a vowel suffix but retained before a consonant suffix. Words ending in 'ce' or 'ge' retain the 'e' before some suffixes but change to 'i' before 'ous'.
