SAFE USE OF HAND TOOLS SAFE USE OF HAND TOOLS About 8 percent of industrial accidents involve the unsafe use of Manual and power hand tools. These accidents result from using the wrong tool for the job, using tools incorrectly. Basic rules for Hand/Power Tools Basic rules for Hand/Power Tools Hand tools shall be used only for the purpose they were designed. Do not improvise with the wrong tool. Never lift tools by their cords. Hold drills firmly. Most drill injuries are caused by the drill binding and twisting in the operators hands. Before plugging or un- plugging tools, be sure to turn the power switch to off. Always use ground-fault circuit interrupters. Saws, drills, and grinders can send debris flying at very high speeds, protect eyes. Read the manufacturers manual before using the tool. Inspect screws and bolts to make sure they are tightened. Never disconnect power by pulling on the cord, disconnect by pulling the plug from the outlet. Never clean or repair a tool unless the power is disconnected, repair tools only if you are trained to do so. When working on ladders or scaffolding, rest tools on a flat surface or in a bin secured to the ladder. Do not wear rings, jewelry, or loose clothing when using power tools. Only trained workers will be permitted to operate the equipment. All tools will be used with the correct shields, guards and attachments recommended by the manufacturer. Hand tool maintenance Hand tool maintenance Tools shall be kept free from grease, moisture, and chemicals to prevent damage and corrosion, Hand tools shall be regularly inspected for defects and when necessary kept in good repair and maintained by qualified personnel, Tools must be scrapped if worn or damaged beyond repair. Isolated hand tools Only insulated or non conductive tools shall be used on or near live electrical equipment, if there is a risk of electrical shock.
