Types of Chisel

There are several types of chisels used for different purposes: flat chisels for cutting thick metal, cross cut chisels for narrow grooves, diamond point chisels for corners and narrow grooves, half round chisels for rounded grooves and drilling corrections, side chisels for vertical sides, and cow mouth chisels for removing lumps inside holes. Safety measures for chiseling include firmly clamping the workpiece, maintaining proper workpiece height, and focusing on the chisel edge rather than the hammer.

Types of Chisel

Chisels may be categorized as follows:

Flat Chisel
Cross Cut Chisel
Diamond Point Chisel
Half Round Chisel
Side Chisel
Cow Mouth Chisel
Lets understand each one of them in details:
Flat Chisel: A flat chisel becomes especially useful for cutting and chipping metals when it becomes
difficult or not suitable to use a hacksaw or a shearing machine for cutting a piece of thick gauge metal.
This chisel becomes specifically important for chipping and parting sheet metals. The cutting edge of a
flat chisel is slightly convexed. Generally its cutting angle for cutting hard steel is about 700 to 750, for
cutting mild steel its around 600 and for brass or other soft metals its about 400.
Cross Cut Chisel: In cases where it becomes inconvenient to use a flat chisel, a cross cut chisel becomes a
better option, like while cutting narrow flat bottomed grooves. A cross chisel is specially forged to make
its cutting edge little wider than the rest of the body to ensure that the chisel never gets stuck while
working inside deeper grooves.
Diamond Point Chisel: Its used for cutting in corners and also narrow grooves.
Half Round Chisel: Its used for cutting half round bottom-grooves and for rectifying the incorrect starts
while drilling.
Side Chisel: A type of this chisel is used for chipping vertical sides of keyways and cotter-slots flat.
Cowmouth Chisel: This chisel becomes useful for removing visible lumps from the inner sides of cored
holes.
A few of the safety measures that should be normally observed while handling chisels are as follows:
The object to be chiseled should be firmly clamped over a bench vise.
Its height of the above fixing should be appropriately maintained to facilitate easy chiseling.
Never look at the hammer head while hitting the chisel, instead concentrate on the chisels cutting edge
and the chipping procedure of the object.
