Shutter Mechanism For The Pleiades Satellites: Client: Cnes, Eads Astrium

The Pleiades satellites each contain a high-resolution telescope with a shutter mechanism that opens and closes a diaphragm to protect the detection equipment from overheating in direct sunlight. The shutter mechanism consists of two rotating shafts driven by a single stepper motor and gear transmission to positions detected by reed switches, and can open and close in 1.5 seconds without needing power to maintain positions.

SHUTTER MECHANISM FOR THE PLEIADES SATELLITES

The Pleiades program is comprised of two Earth Observation Satellites including

a High-Resolution Telescope. The instrument incorporates a Shutter Mechanism
that opens and closes the diaphragm located at the output of the telescope to
prevent the sun, in an emergency, from illuminating and overheating the
detection equipment.
The mechanism consists of two rotating shafts driven by one stepper motor
and a gear transmission. End positions are detected by reed switches.
The mechanism main performances are:
G No launch locking device is required.
G No power is needed to maintain the mechanism in the open or the close
positions.
G Rotation angle 90.
G Open and close operations duration 1.5 s.
G Mass 1.8 kg.
G Power 15 W.
G Stiffness 200 Hz.
