About Me: I grew up in Inglewood, California and earned a B.S. in Mathematics with an Education
Option from Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2011. I started graduate school in September 2011 and I
earned my Masters of Arts in Education and my Preliminary California teaching credential in 2012.
I enjoy spending time with my husband and my two dogs, Dodger (Shih tzu) and Petey (pit
bull).
Course Description: This course is challenging in order to ensure that students have the necessary
pre-requisite skills to be successful in math the following year as well as in future college-level
mathematics. The course is comprised of daily in-class investigations and independent computer
work. In-class investigations will focus on honing students comprehension of the following essential
skills:

Geometry Basics Quadratic Equations
Similarity Functions
Circles Introduction to Trigonometry
Geometric Measurement & Dimension
Office Hours: Wednesday - Thursday 4-5 pm.
Materials: You are required to bring your course materials every class period. The following
materials are required for the course:
-1-subject notebook (2)
-pencils and erasers (NO PENS)
-gluestick
-highlighters (at least two colors)
Homework/Classwork
a. Homework/classwork will be assigned is expected to be completed. Homework will be
collected and stamped for completion and quality
***You will lose Habits of Mind (which accounts for 10% of your overall grade)***
every two weeks. Incomplete (missing
more than 2 problems) or low quality homework will not be stamped and will be given
a 0 in the grade book and labeled as missing. You can complete the assignment prior
to the end of the unit for partial credit. Grades will permanently stay a 0 if the student
does not turn in the missing assignment by the end of the unit. It is the students
responsibility to reach out to the teacher if they are absent.
b. Students who receive a grade of 2 or below on a final exam MUST re-take the final
exam within 2 weeks after the original assessment date. After a 2 week lapse from the
original due date, grade is irrevocable. Retakes are not available for quick checks.
Class-wide Policies: 100% effort is defined as follows:
1) Respect 100% attention and silence is required and expected when the teacher or a
classmate is talking and sharing their thoughts.
2) Messiness - You are responsible for ensuring that your workspace is clean at the end of
each day. You will forfeit habit of mind points for any infractions.
3) Food and Drink - Food is NOT allowed in class (with exceptions). Irresponsible behavior:
a. Any disruptions involving food and drink.
b. Not cleaning up after yourself.
4) Electronic devices - Use of electronic devices is not permitted unless specifically indicated.
Electronic devices will be confiscated. Repeated offenders will be required to have their
parents pick them up at the front office. You may not charge your phone in class.
5) Tardiness - You must be in your assigned seat at the start of class.
6) Outside work - Outside work will be confiscated.
Working in Groups: You will participate in numerous team-based investigations throughout this course.
The following represent the norms for working in groups:
-No talking outside your team
-Discuss questions with your team before calling me (3B4ME)
-Keep team conversations on math
-You must help everyone in your study team who asks a question
-Helping your teammate does not mean giving answers
-Explain your ideas with reason (always justify your work)
-Do not leave anyone behind or let anyone work ahead
-Clear off tables before getting to work so you can see everyones paper
-You must use study team voices
Grading: Your grade for this course will depend on your performance in several categories: essential
skills and knowledge (which includes your exams, quizzes, homework evaluations, projects,
presentations, and lab work), Habits of Mind (accountability, collaboration, quality), and 21
st
Century Design Skills.
