ISB Reciever 7

The document summarizes the key components and advantages of an ISB receiver. It is a double conversion superheterodyne receiver that uses mechanical filters to separate the two independent sidebands. It obtains automatic gain control by rectifying part of the combined audio signal to generate a DC voltage proportional to average audio level. It has a fixed frequency wideband RF amplifier or very high first intermediate frequency of 40.555 MHz for excellent image frequency rejection. Some advantages of the initial RF amplifier include greater gain and sensitivity, better selectivity and signal-to-noise ratio, and improved coupling between antenna and receiver. As a double conversion receiver, it uses a high intermediate frequency after the first mixer and low intermediate frequency after the second mixer.

ISB RECEIVER

ISB RECEIVER
Important Points:
It is a double conversion super heterodyne receiver
The two independent sidebands are separated by mechanical
filters.
As the carrier is not transmitted it is necessary to obtain AGC by
rectifying part of the combined audio signal. From this a DC
voltage proportional to the average audio level is obtained.
The interesting feature is a fixed frequency wideband RF
amplifier or a very high FIRST intermediate frequency of 40.555
MHz. This provides an excellent image frequency rejection.
Components

Advantages of initial RF amplifiers
1. Greater gain hence better sensitivity.
2. Better image frequency rejection .
3. Signal to noise ratio is improved.
4. Better adjacent signal rejection that means better selectivity.
5. Coupling between antenna and receiver is improved due to
impedance matching.
6. It prevents re-radiation of local oscillator frequency through
antenna.
Double Conversion Receiver
Since it is a double conversion receiver we will find high
intermediate frequency at the output of first mixer and low
intermediate frequency at the output of the second.
High intermediate frequency at the output of the first mixer
provides high image frequency rejection ratio.
Low intermediate frequency helps in
1. Improving selectivity. As BW=(fr/Q) it helps in proper
attenuation of undesirable sidebands.
2. Tracking difficulties are minimized.
3. With low IF it is easy to design IF amplifiers with high gain
and better stability, because neutralization becomes easy.

SYNTHESIZER
A Synthesizer is a circuit
which generates many
different output frequencies
by addition,subtraction
,multiplication,division of a
single frequency or lesser
number of frequency sources.
It generally uses a master
oscillator or an oscillator
synchronised with highly
stable frequency.
It reduces the cost of a large
number of local oscillators.
