The Floating Island

A e o l I a

Aeolia, the floating island of the
wind god, Aeolus. Aeolus lives in
Aeolia together with his six (6) sons
and six (6) daughters.
Aeolia is the island which Odysseus
and his crew landed while they were
lost in the Mediterranean Sea.
The location of the island is
shrouded with mystery but it might
be in the group of islands north of
the eastern-most coast of Sicily

The Journey of Odysseus
Odysseus and his men keep sailing and they
found an island floating above the sea with a
steep cliff of bronze with a palace on top of it.
They came upon the island of Aeolia, home of
Aeolus, god of the wind. Aeolus treated
Odysseus with much kindness and encouraged
him to tell him stories of Troy and his travels
homeward.

Odysseus had many stories, and Aeolus and his
children enjoyed them so much that Odysseus
and his men stayed there for a month. After a
month, Odysseus decided it was time to
continue his journey, and Aeolus thanked him,
and gave him a bag tied with a silver cord.

In the bag, he bound up all the winds but the
kind and gentle west winds, in order to help
Odysseus in his travels. Odysseus sets back and
sails for nine days. The wind being so favorable,
they can see Ithaca, the home of Odysseus.
Odysseus men are so curious about whats in
the bag that they opened it and all the harsher
winds were let loose and carried them to
unknown seas.
