Measurement of Variables: Operational Definition

Operationalizing concepts involves reducing abstract concepts to make them measurable in a tangible way. This is done by looking at the behavioral dimensions, facets, or properties denoted by the concept. To operationalize a concept, the typical broad characteristics or dimensions should be examined. Each dimension should then be broken down further into observable and quantifiable elements. An operational definition does not describe correlates of the concept or consist of delineating reasons, antecedents, consequences, or correlates of the concept. If concepts are not operationalized correctly or are confused with other concepts, then the measures will not be valid and the research will not be scientific.
