Effect of Hearing Loss On Child Development

Hearing loss in children can negatively impact their development in several key areas: Vocabulary development is slower as they learn concrete words more easily than abstract words and struggle to understand words with multiple meanings. Sentence structure comprehension and usage tends to be simpler with difficulty handling complex sentences and distinguishing word endings. Academic achievement lags especially in reading and math, with gaps between normal-hearing and hearing-impaired children widening as schooling progresses. Speaking is also affected as they may not hear or produce quiet sounds correctly and lack self-monitoring of their own speech. Early intervention therapy can help hearing-impaired children develop language skills, but treatment needs to start as early as possible for best outcomes.
