Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleons Military History
At the age of 16, Napoleon
graduated school as a
lieutenant in the army
In 1795, royalist rebels
attacked the National
Convention
Napoleon defended the
Convention from the
thousands of attackers and
became a national hero

Napoleon Becomes Leader of France
On November 9
th

1799, at the age of 31,
Napoleon becomes
the top General in the
French Army
The next day,
Napoleon drives out
French leadership in a
coup detat and
becomes the new
leader of France

Napoleonic Code
Took away womens rights
to property
Restricted freedom of
speech and of the press
Restored slavery in French
colonies in the Caribbean


Napoleon Becomes Emperor
In late 1804, French
citizens voted to make
Napoleon emperor of
France
This is known as
democratic despotism
Despot = Tyrant
Napoleons Rule
Napoleon had
conquered the
nations of:
Spain
Italy
Germany
Austrian Empire
Coronation of Napoleon
At the crowning
ceremony, as the
pope began to
place the crown
on Napoleons
head, Napoleon
snatched it away
from him and
placed it on his
own head
Napoleons Empire Collapses
In 1812, Napoleon suffers his first defeat as he
invades Russia
Napoleon is exiled to the island of Elba
He escapes in 1815, returns to France and
regains control of the country
A few months later he is defeated at the Battle
of Waterloo which becomes his final battle
The Congress of Vienna
Shortly after Napoleons defeat several formally
conquered nations gathered together in the
Austrian capital city of Vienna
Their goal was to establish long-lasting peace on
the European continent by weakening France
Though the Congress weakened the country of
France, they did not want to punish it so harshly
that it would cause France to seek revenge

They also made it so that removed monarchs
should be returned to the throne
In France, this meant that the new leader of
France became
Louis XVIII (XVIs brother)
