Standing Order-AMS Draft

This document outlines the procedure for patients presenting with altered mental status. Common symptoms include confusion, dizziness, disorientation, weakness, fatigue, and nausea/vomiting. The procedure is to place the patient in an exam room, obtain a urine analysis and pregnancy test if female, check blood glucose levels, start an IV, and draw blood for a complete blood count and basic metabolic panel. Standard orders include these tests. A CT head scan may be ordered after physician assessment, and IV fluids administered if dehydration causes the altered mentation.
