physical adaptions of animals and draw on this knowledge to explore practical
concepts.
Estimated Time: 60 minutes
Lesson Objectives: Independently viewing texts and constructing knowledge: VR6 iv Using visual features for impact: WC6 xii
Classroom Organisation: Group desks so that there are 4 groups.
Resources: Animals Alive by Dorling Kindersley
Teacher Preparation:
1. Photocopy pages 24-64 from the book Animals Alive and 10-11, 14-21 and 24-29 from How Animals and Plants Survive in Australias Forest. 2. Out of these pages randomly place 11 on each group of tables. 3. Cut up slips of paper with descriptions of different environments and place these in a container.
Student Experiences:
1. Without seeing, students pick a description of an environment (in resources) out of the box. 2. Students independently read the environment description. 3. The task is to create/design their own animal that would have physical features suitable for survival in this environment (Kerr, 2014). 4. Starting at their normal desks, students take notes and gather information that relate to animal adaptions within similar environments. 5. After approximately 10 minutes student groups rotate to a new group of desks and continue note taking. 6. Create an A4 poster that includes: a. The name of the animal b. A sketch of the animal c. Labels attached to the distinct features of the animal and short statements explaining how these will help them survive. 7. Create a class book with all the posters. a. Decide on a name for the book e.g. Animals engineered to survive (if there are any disagreements use an anonyms tally)
