NGSSS LA.6.2.1.3 LA.6.2.1.7 Learning Goal: The student will be able to locate and analyze the impact of an authors use of descriptive and figurative language as well as specific word choice on meaning and tone in a variety of literary text. CCSS Standard(s): LACC.6.RI.2.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings. LACC.6.RL.2.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone. LACC.6.L.3.5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. LACC.6.L.3.5a Interpret figures of speech in context. 4.0 In addition to Score 3.0, in-depth inferences and applications that go beyond instruction to the standard, the student will: Critique the effectiveness of an authors use of descriptive language in a variety of text. Critique the effectiveness of an authors use of figurative language in a variety of text. Critique the effectiveness of an authors word choice in appealing to the readers senses and emotions in a variety of literary text. No major errors or omissions regarding the score 4.0 content 3.5 In addition to score 3.0 performance, in-depth inferences and applications with partial success 3.0 The student will: Analyze an authors use of descriptive language and explain how it impacts meaning and/or tone in a variety of literary text. Analyze an authors use of figurative language and explain how it impacts meaning and/or tone in a variety of literary text. Analyze an authors use of specific word choice and explain how it impacts meaning and/or tone. Provide evidence from the text to support the analysis of an authors use of language in a variety of literary text.
