This document contains 7 sample questions for Chapter 1 of the EAT 213 course. The questions cover topics like calculating density, specific weight, and specific gravity for various fluids given their masses and volumes. They also ask about fluid viscosity, surface tension, and determining specific gravity when given the weights of empty and filled containers. Mastering these fundamental fluid properties and calculations is important as they are concepts regularly built upon in subsequent chapters.

EXAMPLE OF QUESTIONS FOR CHAPTER 1
1. A cylindrical can 150 mm in diameter is filled to a depth of 100 mm with a fuel oil. The oil has a mass 1.56 kg. Calculate its density, specific weight and specific gravity. [6 M] 2. By using suitable example, explain what is mean by fluid viscosity. [4 M] 3. By using a simple sketch, explain what is meant by surface tension. [5 M]
4. Vinegar has a density of 1080 kg/m 3 . Calculate its specific weight and specific gravity.
5. Methyl alcohol has a specific gravity of 0.789. Calculate its density and specific weight.
6. What volume of mercury (S.G. = 13.54 would weigh the same as 0.020 m 3 of castor oil, which has a specific weight of 9.42 kN/m 3 .
7. A cylindrical container is 150 mm in diameter and weighs 2.25 N when empty. When filled to a depth of 200 mm with certain oil, it weighs 35.4 N. Calculate the specific gravity of the oil.
Note: Q1-3 extracted from the Test 1 (Sem 1, SA 2012/13). Though theres no specific question in the Final Exam for this chapter, BUT, it is really important for you to master is as in regularly used on the subsequence chapters for this subject.
