Reflection 1
Standard 1.b. ESC 760
Standard 1.b. Language Acquisition and Development. Candidates understand and apply theories and research in second language acquisition and development to support their ELLs social and academic English language and literacy learning and content-area achievement.
Standard 1.b. focuses on language acquisition and development. In this standard, one must be able to understand and apply theories and research in second language acquisition to support their ELLs language achievement, and this is exactly what I did in my term paper for ESC 760. For my paper I chose to review research on how mainstream educators successfully teach and bridge the gap between native speakers and ELLs in the classroom. The paper focused on positive teacher beliefs and attitudes, and various successful strategies that helped support ELLs social and academic success. I also discussed research that had previously been found to assist the mainstream teachers with appropriate language environments that would be beneficial to all leaners in the classroom. This research paper helped me better prepare for teaching ESL students because I was able to acquire many strategies that would help educate all types of learners and students in my classroom. Prior to this paper I often wondered how it was possible to provide learning opportunities that support all of my learners in the classroom regardless of their language ability, but after completing research I have gathered many ways to create subject matter that is meaningful for my students. Second language acquisition and development is an extremely crucial and sensitive time period in a students life and I have learned as an educator that we must use a students ability to code-switch and their knowledge of their native language to create an effective, supportive, and successful learning environment.
