General Info
A music magazine is a magazine focused on a
particular/similar genre(s) of music aimed at fans of
said genre(s).
The content usually found in music magazines
consists of
interviews from band members
competitions to win gig tickets or merchandise
stories about artists lives (journey to success)
album and gig reviews
posters of band members from photo-shoots
music related information such as info on upcoming gigs
and tour, new releases and info on upcoming artists
providing some freebies to the customer as a selling point
to make it appear more attractive to the customer
Characteristics
In terms of images, music magazines usually contain images
of:
Bands: photo-shoots, during concerts or just them going about
their business (e.g. Rock star spotted at concert with family!)
Posters: pictures of artists, promotional shoots, album posters
Snapshots from videos: Promote interviews to be viewed
online, viral videos relevant to genres artists, gig videos

Other common characteristics found in music
magazines would be a:
Feature Musician (Main image)
An interview/article with the feature musician (main cover line)
Freebies (puffs/strapline)
Gig/merchandise information (cover line/strapline)
Mastheads (top left)

They all contain:
A musician as a main image
The main cover line being about said musician and it being significantly
different to the others
Puffs
Masthead in top left corner/top third
This is important because it focuses on the main musician for that issue, promoting them,
the musician being the magazines Unique Selling Point (USP)
They also want the audience to be aware of the genre and the artist. The magazine
promotes the artist so those unaware of the artist may begin to listen to them, and the artist
promotes the magazine as fans of the artist may begin to purchase the magazine or at
least the issue containing them. This is known as a synergy.
Top Of The Pops is a music magazine focusing on the sub-genre of pop. This is the
connotation I have made sue to the artists on the front cover; The Jonas Brothers, Alesha
Dixon, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande. They are all well known pop artists. The target
audience of this magazine would be fans of pop music in general as well as those
interested in the particular artists featured. This would be due to the fact that the magazine
promotes pop music and pop artists as well as the lifestyle of someone who enjoys pop
music.
