NELSON MANDELA

Nov 15, 2010-- Nelson Mandela didn't always look like a visionary. For 27 years, he simply looked like a prisoner,
locked up for antiapartheid activism. What seemed like a long exercise in futility is now legend: after his release, he
became his country's president, and today is an icon of commitment and compassion. Fortunately, visionary thinkers
aren't always imprisoned, but they are often ridiculed, marginalized, or just plain dismissed for proposing big ideas
that sound outlandish to others. To prove that dreams are possible, Utne Reader highlights a few of the lofty,
laudable, and reachable goals of 25 visionaries

CHARLIE CHAPLIN
Charlie was thrown on his own resources before he reached the age of ten as the early death of his
father and the subsequent illness of his mother made it necessary for Charlie and his brother, Sydney, to
fend for themselves.
Chaplin was one of the rare comedians who not only financed and produced all his films (with the
exception of "A Countess from Hong Kong"), but was the author, actor, director and soundtrack
composer of them as well
DHIRUBHAI AMBANI
He worked as a petrol pump attendant at the age of 16
Dhirubhai Ambani was head of the multibillion-dollar Reliance group of industries with extensive
interests in textiles, petrochemicals, energy and telecommunications.
KARSANBHAI PATEL
This was an after-office business - the one-man company would bicycle through the neighbourhoods
selling handmade detergent packets door to door. At a price of Rs. 3 per kg, (one third the price of
leading detergents), it was an instant success.
He is the founder of the Rs. 2500 crore (USD 500 mn) Nirma group with major interests in detergents,
soaps and cosmetics
NARENDRA MODI
As a teenager Modi used to run a tea stall with his brother, and today for the third time he has elected
as the CM of Gujarat.
AMITABH BACHHAN
It is interesting to note that many of the producers and directors, whom Amitabh approached initially, rejected his
voice quality and today his voice has provided narrations for several films. Also he is the Bollywood superstar.
NARAYAN MURTHY INFOSYS

ALBERT EINSTEIN
Even as a young child, people recognized him as mentally slow. Language came so hard to him
that some feared hed never learn to speak.
He thought he wanted to teach science, but some of his teachers wouldnt recommend him to teaching
positions. After rejection after rejection for jobs, a friend finally got him a job in a patent office, where
they decided if people's inventions should be patented. It would take him 9 years after college
graduation before hed get his first teaching job
Als full name was, of course, Albert, Albert Einstein, considered by many the greatest genius who ever
lived. In 1999, Time magazine crowned him the person of the century, describing him as "the pre-
eminent scientist in a century dominated by science."

Harland David Sanders, the famous KFC "Colonel," couldn't sell his
chicken. More than 1,000 restaurants rejected him.
But then one did, and today there are KFC restaurants bearing his image all over the world.

Charlie Chaplin's act was rejected by executives because they
thought it was too obscure for people to understand.
But then they took a chance on Chaplin, who went on to become America's first bona fide movie
star.

Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because he "lacked
imagination and had no good ideas."
Several more of his businesses failed before the premiere of his movie Snow White. Today,
most childhoods wouldn't be the same without his ideas.

Albert Einstein didn't speak until age four and didn't read until age
seven. His teachers labeled him "slow" and "mentally handicapped."
But Einstein just had a different way of thinking. He later won the Nobel prize in physics

Henry Ford: While Ford is today known for his innovative assembly line and American-made cars, he
wasn't an instant success. In fact, his early businesses failed and left him broke five times before he
founded the successful Ford Motor Company.
