Ratang Bana Aids Orphanage Playscape & Woodland Rain Garden Due: 10/23/14
After reading through the magazine, I decided on these two articles for a particular
reason. Firstly, I was adopted from Kirov, Russia when I was 6 months old, and even though
thats not a huge amount of time, I lived in an orphanage for that time and it was not in very
good condition. The outside was small and unkept and it included a small play area with only a
slide. This article touched my heart because it shows that there are people who care about
improving the quality of these childrens home which in turn leads to a greater development for
them and also the people of the community. The play space, designed and built for the 350
children in the Ratang Bana orphanage in Alexandria Township, South Africa, is also an open
space resource for the whole community. Seeing that it brings the community together is
great because that leads to more relationships and maybe even other developments in their
area in the future.
I chose Woodland Rain Garden because it reminded me of my home in East Aurora, NY.
Having a long driveway and being surrounded by a huge amount of trees gives off a great
feeling of privacy. Its nice being able to go outside and not hear traffic or your neighbors,
instead, you hear the sound of leaves, birds chirping, and other aspects of nature. It becomes a
very tranquil and quiet place. The way the ravine was incorporated into the landscape was a
beautiful idea as well. The water is visible in roof drains from the house and French drains
from lawn terraces-the drains are exposed at the top of stone retaining walls, then spill over a
ledge into a rock trough... Being able to incorporate elements that were already on the
property is great and that sound of the water adds to the tranquil environment as well.
