The illustrations from Gapminder show some significant factors that have and
continue to influence life in Estonia. The first illustration is the standard analysis
that highlights the growth of life expectancy and income over time. Clearly Estonia
is similar to other European nations and has experienced increased life expectancy
and an increased standard of living over time. One of the most interesting aspects is
the severe drop in life expectancy in the chart that represents 1945, the end of
WWII. Estonia must have suffered many losses during that time period. The second
chart illustrates the growth of income in the country upon the increased use of
broadband. Estonias economy has been positively impacted by the technological
revolution and it is known as one of the most tech-savvy countries in Europe. The
third chart highlights the growth of women working in the service sector.
Traditionally Estonia has been a patriarchal society, however, women are occupying
more jobs and positively influencing the standard of living within the country.
Finally, the last slide highlights the increased use of cell phones as women enter the
service economy. Statistics show that there are more cell phones in Estonia than
there are people. As the standard of living increases, the usage of cell phones
becomes more prevalent. Additionally, cell phones are important to working
mothers because it allows them access to children in case of an emergency. The use
of cell phones will continue to impact the development of opportunities for women
and others throughout the world.
